Peripheral Neuropathy Relief Report

Finally! Help for Neuropathy Sufferers
Peripheral neuropathy is a frustrating, life impairing condition which is all too often inaccurately diagnosed and only treated with medications. Fortunately, with the recent advances in neurologic treatment technologies, relief is available for many neuropathy sufferers.

Five Signs of Peripheral Neuropathy
  1. Numbness
  2. Burning or freezing sensations
  3. Throbbing
  4. Prickling or tingling sensations
  5. Shooting/electric sensations

Peripheral neuropathy is a condition where the nerves that connect our central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to our extremities have been damaged. Peripheral nerves carry more than just pain messages, they carry information about temperature, pressure and proprioception (localization of a body parts). This is why a neuropathy sufferer may have burning, freezing or throbbing sensations. They often find it difficult to walk, go up and down stairs and maintain their balance. Falling is a serious risk for neuropathy sufferers. Many are miserable because of the chronic symptoms they experience, the loss of sleep and the overall impact on their quality of life. There are numerous causes for peripheral neuropathy ranging from diabetes to Statin medication use. Some cases are diagnosed as idiopathic, meaning that the cause is unknown. The following is a list of the more common causes:
Common Causes of Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Diabetes Type 1 or Type 2
  • Statin Drugs
  • Nerve Entrapment Syndromes
  • Nerve Compression due to Disc Protrusion or Stenosis
  • Chemotherapy Treatment
  • Vascular Compromise
  • Metabolic Syndromes such as Thyroid Imbalances
  • Nutritional Deficiencies like low B12, Folic Acid, or Minerals
  • Heredity/Genetic Abnormalities
  • Auto-immunity due to Food Sensitivities
  • Anemia
  • Impaired Gut or Liver or Kidney Function

Breakthrough Treatments
Providing that the damage is not too severe, the goal of treatment is to create an environment that allows the nerves to regenerate. Stated simply, our nerves need fuel and activation to repair. The fuel is oxygen and glucose; activation is us. To get oxygen to nerves we need to breathe properly and have healthy vascular function. Many peripheral neuropathy sufferers have blood sugar dysregulation. If indicated this can be addressed through nutritional therapy. Activation means that the nerves have to be used. You’ve heard the saying “use it or lose it.” Just like a muscle has to be exercised to work well, nerves have to be used to work well. The neurologic treatment breakthroughs we use to treat peripheral neuropathy are specifically designed to activate the nerve fibers and receptors that are damaged and need to be rejuvenated. We provide comprehensive treatment for neuropathy including the following five therapies.
  1. Laser Light Therapy
  2. Functional Neurologic Treatment
  3. Vibration Therapy
  4. Nutritional Supplementation
Laser Light Therapy
We use Class III Low Level Lasers also know as "Cold Lasers" to  increases circulation to nerves and other local tissues. Cold Lasers are very safe because they do NOT produces heat like high power laser that may burn or cut. These specific light waves are also thought to stimulate the chemical, nitric oxide. Nitric oxide plays an important role in increasing circulation and assisting nerve conduction. The improved circulation of blood and oxygen to the treated area reduces inflammation and increases the rate of recovery of damaged nerves.

Scanning Laser Doppler is used to measure local circulation before and after 20 minutes of Laser Light Therapy. Brighter colors indicate increased circulation. The images above were obtained on the feet of 3 individuals. As expected, each person has a baseline blood flow (circulation) which is unique and thus the magnitude of their response to light therapy is also unique. Age, disease status, exercise status and weight, are among variables that determine baseline flow. These 3 individuals demonstrate different baseline blood flows and each had an increase in blood flow following infrared treatment.
Vibration Therapy
Vibration Therapy has been used for the treatment of pain, for rehabilitation, and to enhance athletic performance. Studies have demonstrated the following benefits:
  1. Increased Muscle Strength and Endurance: Depending on the frequency and oscillation of the platform, muscle fibers can be activated 20-50 times per second. This can accomplish a great deal of work in a short period of time
  2. Increased Blood and Lymph Fluid Circulation: Rapid contraction of the muscles acts like a pump to increase circulation. This enhances the removal of cellular metabolites (waste products) and the delivery of nutrients and fuel (glucose and oxygen)
  3. Increased Activity of Nerves: Vibration is sensed by receptors in the skin called Meissners and Pacinian corpuscles. Vibration activates these receptors which in turn improves nerve function
  4. Increased Bone Mineral Density: Vibration has been shown to increase the activity of osteoblast cells that make new bone and decrease the activity of osteoclast cells that reabsorb bone
For the treatment of peripheral neuropathy, Vibration offers the benefits of reduced symptoms, increase strength, increased postural control and improved balance.
Nutritional Supplements
As stated previously, our neuropathy treatment program works by creating an environment that allows the nerves to regenerate. That means that the nerves need to have fuel and activation. In addition to supplying adequate oxygen and maintaining healthy, stable levels of glucose, specific supplements have been found beneficial for nerve repair. Supplements often recommended are as follows:
  • Nitric Balance (to increase the two isomers of nitric oxide that assist in nerve & blood vessel repair)
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids
  • CoQ-10
  • Vitamin B Complex
  • Vitamin D

Peripheral Neuropathy Home Care Treatment
In addition to the in-office Peripheral Neuropathy treatment procedures, we also guide and instruct each patient through sustainable home care therapies. Please see below for some examples of the home therapies.
  • Nerve Stimulation
  • Sensory Motor Coordination
  • Myofascial Mobilization

Additional Treatments for Complex Cases

Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by a variety of chemical/metabolic imbalances. These imbalances can be caused by conditions ranging from toxic chemicals to chemotherapy treatment. Nutritional Therapy is designed to normalize body chemistry. This is accomplished through changes to diet such as eliminating foods that you are sensitive to, adding healthy foods and using nutritional supplements to assist in the rebalancing process. Individual consulting and treatment is available with our certified nutritional therapy practitioner. The following is a list of lab tests that would frequently be ordered to assess need for nutritional therapy for a neuropathy patient.
Typical Lab Tests for Nutritional Therapy for Neuropathy Patients
  • CBC (complete blood counts)
  • CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel)
  • Homocysteine (an inflammatory marker)
  • Lipid Panel
  • Complete Thyroid Panel including TSH, T4, T3, T3 uptake, TBG, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, TGB antibody and TPO antibody
  • Iron panel including Ferritin
  • Hemoglobin A1c
  • Vitamin D 25 (OH)
  • Adrenal -24 HR Cortisol Profile
  • GI Permeability
  • H Pylori Infection (for impaired digestion)
  • Food Sensitivity/Cross Reactivity (Gluten, Dairy, Soy, Tapioca, Coffee etc.)
  • Specialized, genetic testing for hereditary conditions like PMP-22 gene deletion
Physical Medicine Treatments
Physical Rehabilitation, Chiropractic Care and Massage Therapy are examples of physical medicine treatments that may be necessary for complex neuropathy cases. Most often they are necessary when dealing with nerve entrapment or compression syndromes. Correction of postural misalignment, abnormal movement patterns and imbalances in muscle tone can be essential components to a successful neuropathy treatment program. Fortunately, we are often able to help with these as well.

Can these treatments help you?
As you can tell from this report, peripheral neuropathy can be a complex condition both to diagnose and to treat. Now there are safe and effective treatments as an alternative to just medicating over the symptoms. These treatments are designed to rejuvenate and rebuild damaged malfunctioning nerves so they can work properly, and you can regain your quality of life. The only way to determine whether or not these neurologic treatments are appropriate for you is to accurately diagnose your condition. One of the keys to successful treatment is to determine which nerve fibers or receptors have been damaged and how severely. To do this we use an expanded version of the Toronto Clinical Scoring System in addition to a detailed history, comprehensive examination. To determine whether or not these breakthroughs in treatment can help you, we invite you to call us and schedule a consultation.
